First, find out which battery they use

Milwaukee tools run on M12 (small, 12-volt) or M18 (bigger, 18-volt) batteries, and they don’t mix. Peek at their tools: the battery says M12 or M18 on it. If you can’t check, pick a kit: it comes with its own battery and charger.

Bare tool or kit?

A 'bare tool' (model ending in -20) has no battery or charger, so it’s only a good gift if they already own that battery type. Anything ending in -21, -22 and so on includes batteries.
