Best Milwaukee impact wrench for lug nuts

Which Milwaukee impact wrench to buy for changing tires on cars and trucks, from compact to high torque.

For most cars, SUVs and light trucks, a 1/2" mid-torque impact wrench is the sweet spot: plenty of power to break lug nuts loose, in a size that's easy to handle. Here's how the main options compare, using the manufacturer's figures.

Best for most people: M18 FUEL mid-torque (2962-20)

Rated at 650 ft-lbs of nut-busting torque and 550 ft-lbs fastening. Strong enough for lug nuts and most suspension work, and shorter than a high-torque gun. Compare it to the high torque.

Smallest: compact and stubby

The M18 FUEL compact (2855-20) and the M12 FUEL Stubby (2563-20) fit in tight spaces. The stubby is rated at 550 ft-lbs nut-busting, the compact at 250 ft-lbs. See them side by side.

For big trucks and rusted bolts: high torque (2967-20)

Rated at up to 1,600 ft-lbs nut-busting. Overkill for most cars, but the right tool for heavy trucks, equipment and seized bolts.

Don't forget to torque them right

Use the impact wrench to remove lug nuts and run them on, then tighten them to your vehicle's spec with a torque wrench. Over-tightening with an impact can damage studs and brake rotors.
